Why I Recommend ECCO Shoes for Foot Pain Relief – From a Podiatrist in Albuquerque

As a podiatrist at New Mexico Foot & Ankle Institute in Albuquerque, I’m often asked for shoe recommendations—especially by patients dealing with chronic foot pain, heel pain, or tendinitis. While I’ve casually recommended ECCO shoes in the past (knowing they carry the APMA Seal of Acceptance), it wasn’t until I personally wore a pair that I fully understood the difference they make.

After more than 25 years of wearing professional dress shoes, I recently purchased a pair of ECCO dress shoes for work. And to be completely honest, they are the most comfortable, supportive, and well-designed dress shoes I’ve ever worn. Now, I recommend them without hesitation to many of my patients and here’s why.

True Comfort Backed by Support

ECCO shoes offer an impressive combination of comfort and structural support. As a podiatrist, I see many shoes that either feel good at first but don’t provide lasting support—or are supportive but far too rigid to wear all day. ECCO has found that sweet spot.

They use high-quality materials in their uppers and midsoles, and the build of the shoe offers great stability—particularly important for patients suffering from plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, or flat feet.

A Rare Find: Dress Shoes That Fit Orthotics

One of the biggest challenges for patients who wear custom orthotics is finding dress shoes that will actually accommodate them. Most dress shoes, frankly, aren’t built for orthotics—and squeezing them in can create more harm than good.

ECCO dress shoes have removable insoles and a deep enough footbed to comfortably fit my own pair of cushioned custom orthotics. That’s a rare and valuable feature, and something I now emphasize to patients who need supportive footwear but also want to look professional.

Superior Summer Sandals

Living in Albuquerque, we get plenty of warm weather—and many of my patients want footwear options that are cooler and more breathable during the long summer months. ECCO sandals are among the very best I’ve found for this purpose. Unlike flat flip-flops or poorly constructed sandals that offer no arch support, ECCO’s sandals are thoughtfully designed with foot health in mind. They include built-in arch support and stable footbeds—helping patients stay comfortable and reduce flare-ups of conditions like heel pain or Achilles tendinitis, even when they're just relaxing in the backyard.

While sandals like these might cost a bit more, the investment is worth it for patients who would otherwise need to be in orthotics 24/7. ECCO sandals offer a comfortable compromise.

Great Women’s Footwear Options Too

Though I haven’t worn the women’s versions myself, I’ve evaluated them thoroughly and have no hesitation recommending ECCO’s women’s shoes and sandals—especially for summer wear. Their women’s lines include many supportive, stylish options that prioritize foot health while still looking great.

Where to Buy ECCO Shoes in Albuquerque

Many patients ask me where I bought my ECCO shoes locally. I found mine at Tradehome Shoes in Coronado Mall here in Albuquerque. Their staff is knowledgeable, and they take the time to ensure shoes are properly fitted—something that’s surprisingly rare these days.

You can also find ECCO shoes at Dillard’s, but in my experience, the fitting and service can vary. If you’re investing in high-quality footwear, proper fitting makes a big difference.

Conclusion

There are many good shoe brands out there, and I always remind patients that not every model within a brand is equal. Just like running shoes, some are built better than others. But ECCO has consistently impressed me with how well-designed their shoes are across the board. That makes them much easier for me to confidently recommend—whether for dress wear, daily walking, or summer comfort.

We also maintain a list of recommended shoe brands and local retailers here on our website to help you find the best options for your feet: https://www.nmfootandankle.com/shoes/

If you’re dealing with chronic foot pain or looking for footwear that can help support your recovery from conditions like plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, or flat feet, don’t underestimate the impact of the right shoe. ECCO is a brand that has truly earned my trust—both as a podiatrist and as a wearer.

Need help choosing the right shoe for your condition? And even if they do start out that way, life can throw a few obstacles in your path that end up making your feet hurt—every single day. Certain shoe styles, medical conditions such as diabetes and arthritis, and even healthy exercise/sports can create foot problems that slow you down.

For many pain-causing problems, foot inserts/orthotics are often recommended to help balance foot structures that may be out of alignment or imbalanced. Foot orthotics can be made from different materials and may be rigid, semirigid, semiflexible, or accommodative, depending on your diagnosis and specific needs.

Over-The-Counter Inserts

Determining what type of insert will work for your feet is what our Albuquerque podiatrists do best. After a thorough evaluation that includes assessing your foot structure, current footwear, and how you walk, recommendations for non-custom over-the-counter inserts or custom-type will be discussed with you. Many foot problems can be addressed with OTC inserts and proper shoes. A question often asked by patients is about kiosk-type inserts, which capture an image of your foot and then recommend inserts.

These may provide some relief, but more frequently only do so for short periods of time, then individuals are motivated to make an appointment with our orthotic specialists. New Mexico Foot & Ankle Institute has several types of OTC inserts that are often recommended and are priced reasonably.

Custom Orthotics

Custom orthotics are recommended for foot deformities where asymmetry is present or more progressed structural malalignment exists. These orthotics are made to an actual model of your foot that is either captured via a casting process or via advanced digital scanning. There are many choices for orthotic materials and the toplines or covers.

Your doctor will discuss with you what activities and footwear you will be using the orthotics for and then determine the type of orthotic to order. Often, the recommendation is to have different orthotics made for the variable activities and shoes being used. An orthotic made for a hiking shoe needs to be sturdier with greater shock absorption than one used in a dress shoe. Instead of compromising how one orthotic will work for you if you are active in different types of sports or work, having different orthotics may be the better choice.

Orthotics are Built to Last

The good news about custom orthotics is that they will last many years. I personally have an orthotic that is over 30 years old and works as well as it did when it was originally made. Just like your home and car, orthotics do need regular maintenance to keep them in the best working condition. With that said, many patients do require new, updated orthotics as their foot structures may have changed over time, so we recommend annual check-ups on your orthotics to make sure they are working optimally for you. We are obviously blessed with these opportunities to get out and enjoy the natural world. The term “dogs” has dual meaning here:

1) Feet, often referred to as dogs in the early 20th century and

2) Canines. While walking and hiking, both “dogs” need to be prepared and protected from foot injuries and overuse.

Podiatrist Recommendations on Shoes and Socks

As an Albuquerque podiatrist, I am often asked for recommendations on sock and footwear choices. Having properly fitting socks is important, along with shoe/boot fit. Sock fit is often overlooked, and from what I’ve recently observed on the trails, sometimes absent for a few newcomers to hiking. A synthetic blended sock is recommended over 100% cotton, and I advise individuals that the thickness is a personal choice. Obviously, when purchasing new shoes/ boots, try them on with the thickness of sock you’re planning on using.

Shoe/boot choices are dependent on the type of walking/hiking. My observations on the Sandia trails are that experienced participants have “proper” shoes and the less experienced have footwear that I know will be bringing them soon into my office for foot problems. I’m not totally opposed to walking sandals on paved trails but do not feel they’re appropriate on rocky, cactus-laden trails. Using a boot that provides increased ankle support will be beneficial, especially if you’ve had a history of ankle sprains, posterior tibialis tendonitis, or overpronation.

Hiking With Dogs

Not only are humans out on the trails but their dogs too, and it’s clear that many dog owners have not given much thought to their dogs paws or other wellness concerns on the trails. Recently, I’ve witnessed many small dogs being carried on trails that clearly were not appropriate for them to be on. Furthermore, their paws need to be conditioned for longer distances, as well as their joints and muscles too.

Dogs do feel pain and, unlike humans, cannot complain vocally. Similarly to what was stated about matching up the type of footwear to the difficulty or type of trail, matching up your dog is wise too, along with providing booties or applying Musher’s wax to their paws. Dog’s “dogs” need protection too.

Additional advice that veterinarians share is making sure your dog is current on their vaccinations and well hydrated and nourished. Our Sandia trails require dogs to be leashed, and I will opine that this is not only safety for others but also for your dog to stay on the trail and hopefully away from cacti.

Summing up – being safe during your walks/hikes is the message for both you and your "dogs." My Albuquerque podiatry office is open, and if concerns arise about human feet or ankles, please call. If your dog is having paw or other problems, please contact a veterinarian.

Choosing the Best Hunting Boots for Albuquerque

It’s fall again and heading into winter, and I see lots of folks worried about the upcoming hunt. Foot problems that we’ve been ignoring for months sometimes become a little more important before the hunt. We realize we have to be able to hike up and down the side of a mountain to get that elusive elk or deer or bear or whatever they may have gotten lucky enough to get tags for this year, and a painful foot or ankle is going to make that impossible.

Best Hunting Boots for New Mexico Conditions

Hunting is a big deal here in New Mexico and there are a lot of things to consider to make sure we avoid injuries during the hunt. As a fan of hunting myself, I have done a lot of research into hunting boots. Luckily, as a general rule, hunting boots almost always fit my criteria for stability and support. With terrain being so varied while hunting, it becomes essential that what we wear on our feet give us support and stability.

What to Look for in a Hiking Boot

Wearing a high top 6 inch or 9 inch boot can protect us not only from the burrs and goat heads getting into our socks but also protect our ankles from the uneven ground that is constantly moving around below us. It is very easy to sprain an ankle and the high top prevents that in most cases. The shank on the boot helps to keep that foot from slipping and give us more strength when we push ourselves forward.

The foot should act almost like a rigid lever to push our bodies forward into that next step. If we have a rigid sole that puts less effort into our feet and more into our boots. That rigid boot is also essential to protect our feet in case we actually harvest an animal and have to hike that heavy load out to our trucks.

Prevent Foot Pain While Hiking in Albuquerque

Having a good boot goes a long way towards keeping us upright and mobile and prevents injuries and falls. The discussion on boots is never complete with a recommendation for a good orthotic. Whether it be a good over-the-counter device or an even better custom orthotic, you can never go wrong with an orthotic in that boot. The last thing you want to do is come home from the hunt to make an appointment with the doctor to spend the next month limping around on a raging case of plantar fasciitis from all that hiking you did.

We are always happy to make recommendations for boots and orthotics, and you can even bring them in and I’ll look at them for you and give you an approval as needed. Boots can be an expensive part of the hunt, but one that cannot be overlooked without some serious consequences. Get some good hiking boots; it’s worth it! Our Albuquerque podiatrist explains the difference:

People have a wide variety of foot sizes, shapes, types, and foot deformities. Mr. Roger’s of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood taught that each child is special and everyone is different in the world. This is also true of the foot. Thankfully, no matter what the foot type you have, the function stays the same.

What Does a Foot Arch Do?

With every step, your foot goes through subtle yet very complex movements to do one of two things:

absorb shock

stiffen up to balance or push off. When people have pain

This is usually caused because one or the other is not working right.

Types of Foot Arches and What They Mean

From looking at the foot from the side, there are three general foot types: high arch, normal, and flatfoot. Most people do actually have more of a normal arch, but that does not mean they are pain- or problem-free. Normal arched patients can have all the same ailments as the rest of the other foot types. However, the low and high arch foot types have several problems that are more unique to each.

Signs of a Flatfoot

In flatfoot deformity, the bony structure is good at shock absorption. However, it has a more difficult time staying stable and strong as a “rigid lever” to push off. Frequently the tendons on the inside of the ankle start to hurt trying to keep the arch up and patients get pains as the arch flattens out. The legs tend to fatigue quickly as well.

Problems with High Arches

For high arches, the foot has a tough time aligning the bones for proper cushioning. Hammertoes quickly develop and sometimes these feet frequently sprain because the front of the foot points inward more, causing the ankle to turn. In severe cases, it can even be a sign of progressive neurological problems.

If you're looking for a podiatrist in Albuquerque who specializes in heel pain, we're here to help!

Half Marathon: Race Day

There is much to consider with race day, assuming you have sufficiently prepared for the race. How much rest do you need? What is your clothing strategy? What do you eat pre-race, night before, and morning of? The answers to all these questions can make or break your day.

Foot Care Tips When Running Marathon

Ideally you will have a good night rest for the 2 nights prior to the race, as there is a study that shows the rest you feel more from 2 days prior than the night before. Most races will start at dawn, which means you are getting ready in the dark and usually colder than when you finish.

Have a good plan to stay warm prior to the race. Eating is a little tricky; just don’t venture outside your previous diet; you don’t want to lose time because your running to the port-a-potty. The make-up of your pre-race breakfast should include simple carbs, protein, and a little fat (so it tastes good). This will give your body access to immediate energy as well as stored energy from the protein and fat. More importantly, drink plenty of water the day before and the morning of; a simple rule of thumb is the same number of ounces of water as kg you are heavy per day.

Tips to Avoid on Race Day

My experience this last month was less than ideal; let me tell you what I did so you can avoid struggling through a long race. I drove 6 hours the day before and ate travel food. When I got to Moab, I decided to camp. After the bone has been given time to heel, early and focused physical therapy will improve the outcome and get you back on the slopes.

Don’t live life in pain! Then you start to notice them rubbing on your shoes, and finally they begin causing pain at all times.

Treating Hammertoes With Orthotics

What can you do? Early on, you can use orthotics or shoe inserts to help the mechanics of your feet to give you the best chance of preventing them. Later, as they are flexible, a minor procedure can be done to help rebalance the muscles. After your toes are permanently deformed, the only choice is surgery to fuse your toes straight. Your best option is to have your feet evaluated early so you can prevent the hammertoes. Come in to see me and bring your hammertoes with you.

If you're looking for a podiatrist in Albuquerque who specializes in heel pain, we're here to help!

Understanding Gout With Our Albuquerque Podiatrist

Growing up, I loved the Indiana Jones movies. They had suspense, adventure, and interesting historical tidbits. One scene became relevant to my profession as I was asked to give a presentation to my co-residents. If you remember in “The Temple of Doom,” there is a scene where a formal dinner was served with snake surprises, beetles, and chilled monkey brains. What do those 3 things have in common, other than being questionable food choices? They would all cause gout flares in someone with gout.

What is Gout?

Gout is an arthritic disease because it attacks joints, usually the big toe joint, but it can affect any joint. Uric acid crystals begin to form in the joint, which is caused by your body having too much uric acid.

You can either be an overproducer of uric acid or an underexcreter; either way, there is too much uric acid in your body. You can recognize gout by a red, hot, swollen, and painful joint; in more severe cases, the crystals called tophi begin oozing out of the skin. If left untreated, gout will do damage to the joint, prevent motion, and can cause constant pain.

Treatment for Gout in Albuquerque

Gout treatments will depend on whether you’re an overproducer or under excreter. There are drugs to take that will help maintain a normal level of uric acid to prevent gout flare ups. When you get a flare, Colchicine is often used to calm it down. It is a good idea to come in to the office so tests can be done to prevent flares and evaluate the amount of damage already done to determine the best way to prevent further damage to the joint. Flat feet are common in early walkers and can stay flat through 6-8 years of age. At this time the knee/leg relationship becomes more like an adult, and children usually don’t grow out of a foot condition after about 8 years old.

Pediatric Flat Feet

Pediatric flat feet, also known as pes planus, is a common condition in which a child's foot appears to have little to no arch when standing. Unlike adults, it is completely normal for young children to have flat feet, as the arch typically develops between ages 3 and 6. Most children naturally develop an arch as their foot structures mature, and in many cases, flat feet do not cause any pain or functional limitations. However, in some instances, persistently flat feet can lead to potential complications or indicate underlying structural issues.

There are two primary types of pediatric flat feet: flexible and rigid. Flexible flat feet are the most common and occur when an arch is present when the child is sitting or standing on tiptoes but disappears when weight-bearing. This type is generally considered benign and often resolves without intervention. Rigid flat feet, conversely, maintain a flat appearance regardless of position and may be associated with more significant structural abnormalities or potential discomfort.

While most pediatric flat feet are asymptomatic, some children might experience symptoms such as foot fatigue, pain in the feet or legs, difficulty with physical activities, or an awkward walking pattern. Risk factors for persistent flat feet include obesity, family history of the condition, certain neurological disorders, and joint hypermobility. Pediatricians and orthopedic specialists typically monitor the development of a child's foot structure during routine check-ups and can recommend interventions if necessary.

Treatment for pediatric flat feet depends on the individual child's symptoms and specific condition. For most children with flexible, flat feet, no treatment is required, as the arch will likely develop naturally. In cases where symptoms persist or the condition appears more severe, interventions might include orthotic devices, specialized footwear, stretching exercises, or physical therapy. Surgical correction is extremely rare and typically reserved for children with rigid flat feet causing significant functional impairment or pain that does not respond to conservative treatments.

If you're looking for a podiatrist in Albuquerque who specializes in children's feet, we're here to help!

Summer Sandals and Ugly Nails: Our Albuquerque Podiatrist Explains What To Do

We treat onychomycosis, aka toenail fungus.

It’s finally getting warm, spring has arrived, and summer is almost here. The sandals always start to show up in our Albuquerque podiatry office this time of year. We get an influx of both new pain from the less supportive sandals and the wave of folks who realize that those ugly toenails need to be treated if they are going to be showing them off in sandals.

Men and women both like to have normal toenails, and after a winter of hiding them in shoes, it is time to figure out how to get them looking normal again. Almost all of the cases of ugly toenails come from a fungus that grows in the nail and makes them thick, discolored, and ugly.

Most folks have tried something the pharmacist, the neighbor, or the internet has suggested and figured out after a few months that they are getting nowhere fast with the current “stuff” they are putting on the nails. Unfortunately, after coming to see a podiatrist, they realize that there is no quick fix for those ugly nails. It takes a lot of work and patience to get them clear and pretty again.

Treating Toenail Fungus in Albuquerque

Topicals, as a general rule, work only about 25% of the time, regardless of whether it is the internet sensation or the latest billion-dollar prescription medication. That leaves you with two options: laser therapy or a pill. A good discussion with a qualified, knowledgeable podiatrist will help you decide which option is best for you. In some rare cases, people even choose to just remove the nails temporarily or permanently. In all cases, if you have fungus in your nails, you should work with your doctor to find the quickest and most effective way to get your nails back to normal again.

Keryflex Toenail Restoration

KeryFlex nail restoration is an advanced medical treatment offered by New Mexico Foot & Ankle Institute to address cosmetic and functional concerns with damaged toe

nails.
